Sources of Energy
The diverse selection of energy sources
There are a variety of different energy sources, each one of which has its own characteristics and preferred applications. Whether we’re looking to provide power to the domestic environment, to a business premises or a whole city, there is a variety of choices. And there are also various ways to provide power to motorised vehicles.
In the home itself, we tend to use electricity and gas to power the heating systems and to cook our food. Lighting and household appliances are run by electricity, too, via a connection to the National Grid. Most people pay their bills on a monthly basis, and often combine their gas and electricity supplies by using the same company.
Environmental issues about energy
Concerns about the environment have led to an increase in the use of more renewable energy sources in recent years, and it’s likely to remain an important issue for many years to come. The most obvious is perhaps solar power, which enhances the rays of the sun. It absorbs them via photovoltaic cells and converts them into electricity.
Wind power is another alternative, and like solar, is completely renewable. In areas of high winds, it’s possible for the consumer to collect and store energy, and even to sell the surplus back to the National Grid. And with wind power, there’s no damage to the environment.
Energy sources in cars
Pollution from car engines is a major environmental issue, as is the depletion of the supply of natural fossil fuels. Hybrid cars, which use far less petrol, also have lower harmful emissions.
