Don’t waste cheap gas, replace your old appliances

Most people don’t realise that if their boiler is more than 10 years old it may be wasting up to half the gas that it uses. And it’s not just old boilers, many old appliances are wildly inefficient compared to modern versions, so you’re not getting the benefit from cheap gas as much of it is going to waste.

A survey by Digital UK found that the oldest working TV in the UK was made in 1936. What is it that makes some people hold on to ancient appliances such as TVs, ovens, etc?

It can’t be for energy efficiency. If all the homes in the UK replaced their boiler with a modern, high-efficiency one, the gas and electricity saved would be enough to heat 2 million homes.

Even updating an old central heating system can make a big difference. Replacing your radiator valves could reduce energy consumption by up to 40%.

Ovens have the same issues: after about 15 years, they should really be replaced. But many people keep on using them well past this time. Although it will still work, older gas ovens need more energy to work at full effiency than modern ovens.

One factor in people’s slowness to change may be down to cheap gas prices, so they don’t notice that the waste is effectively costing them more. However, there are some who stick with an old appliance like an oven out of loyalty or nostalgia.

It may have childhood memories, or if an appliance has been inherited from a family member it might not feel right getting rid of it.

However, the savings available, both in energy used and in the bills that result from this, simply by replacing you boiler make it something very much worth considering.
