How my daughter knows what ‘traitement bois’ means
My daughter, who’s studying French, was bemused by the words ‘traitement bois’ in the small ads section of a Paris newspaper when we were visiting the country. She’s only 12, but she has a fair understanding of the language, thanks to the efforts of the excellent languages department at her school.
After asking a friend who met up with is in Lille, we found out the words meant ‘wood treatment’. The advert had been for a company that specialised in pest control, and could repair damaged parts of the house, as well as anyone who is affected by the presence of creatures such as rats, wasps, termites and flies.
We’ve found that the best way to learn a new language is to visit the countries as often as possible, and this particular incident highlights why it is vital to make the most of these experiences. They can augment the work that the schools are doing.
