How to compare gas payment plans

Before you switch to a new energy supplier, it’s important to compare the gas payment plans on offer. You can save a not insubstantial amount off each bill by altering your payment plan.

A fixed plan may be right for you, if you are one of the 75% of people in the UK who finds their energy bills confusing. With this plan, the price of each unit of energy is fixed for a set period of time. If energy prices are set to rise, this is a particularly good choice.

Alternatively, you may prefer a capped payment plan. If wholesale gas prices are falling then this may be the best choice, as the price you pay won’t go over a set amount, but can drop as prices go down.

There are advantages to online plans, too. They offer the convenience of managing your account over the Internet, and can include an online discount.

For householders who are struggling to meet their bills, social plans are designed to provide help. These plans must be equal to the supplier’s lowest priced deal, and are for vulnerable householders.

Specialised business energy plans are available for commercial gas users. But whatever your circumstances, it’s a good idea to compare gas payment plans to to ensure you get the best value for money. For more information, contact Ofgem.

See the consumer confusion when you compare gas bills

Compare gas bills and electricity bills with other household documents and you’ll see just how confusing they can be.

In a recent survey, 75% of people said they found energy bills baffling, compared with only 27% of people confused by bank statements and 55% by mobile phone bills.

That 75% no doubt wish there was something they could do to cut through the rubbish and make the bills clearer to understand. Is there any way they could be changed, so tha you could compare gas and electricity bills in a similar way to other domestic bills?

A number of the confused felt that the layout of the bills could be simplified, and a change like that would enable more people to see if they were getting a good deal. Additionally, making the calculations shown on the bills simpler would be an improvement.
